Grab is now perhaps the most convenient method to commute these days, easy, fast and saves you from the stress of driving in traffic. but wait, who pays for the tolls when you Grab? Well, the answer is pretty straight forward. At the same time, check out some tips on how to save even more from your next Grab rides below too.

How are fares calculated with Grab?

Grab has different ways of calculating their fares, some of which might include the toll fees.

Upon reviewing the Grab website, here’s what you need to know:

‘GrabCar operates on a fixed rate basis. The fare is calculated based on the distance between the pickup and drop off points entered and the estimated travel time, there is no midnight surcharge but do note that toll charges are not included in the estimated fare and all toll charges are to be borne by passengers.’ – Grab Malaysia.

This means that the toll fare will only be included in your overall fare once you have reached your drop-off point. It is not included in the initially estimated fare as the driver may, or may not, take a toll road.

1. The upfront fare

“With upfront pricing, you know the exact cost of your trip before requesting. This fare includes (but is not limited to):

  • A base rate
  • Rates for estimated time and distance of the route
  • The current demand for rides in the area

A booking fee and any applicable surcharges, fees, and tolls are also calculated and included.

2. The minimum fare

You will either be charged the minimum fare or a fare based on the measured time and distance for your trip, including any base fare, booking fee, surcharges, tolls, and other relevant factors such as a dynamic pricing charge.

Conclusion:

Though Grab has its own methodology of calculating fares, essentially all passengers will have to pay for the tolls. It just depends on whether it’s included in the initial fare or if it’s calculated once the ride is over. You will be able to check the receipt by the end of the trip and make complaints if there is any mistake.

Tips To Save Some Extra Money

1. Know Your Way And Instruct The Driver

There are plenty of alternatives to reach your destination though some routes may take longer than the usual route. Nonetheless, if you can save some extra ringgit, it sounds like a great deal, doesn’t it?

Hence, always do your research and be familiar with the alternative routes so you can save extra money. Also, guide your driver through the alternative routes you have learned.

2. Use Every Single Promo Code

There are plenty of promo codes released by Grab, so make sure you get the latest ones here and use these promo codes to save even more!

3. Invite Your Friends With Your Referral Code

You will have an exclusive referral code from Grab when you signed up as a user. Share the referral code with your friends and family to earn free rides once they sign up too.

4. Find Someone To Share The Ride

For Grab, you can actually opt for GrabShare which is a feature that allows you to share the ride with another rider who is on the same route as yours. By opting to use this feature, you can save up to 30% on your fare. Or else, you can just find friends or colleagues who are heading to the same way to split the costs.

5. Indicate whether you want the toll-road or toll-free road to your driver

Some drivers may or may not ask your preferred routes which may exclude toll and save yourself some money. So you can be proactive and request for the preferred route yourself.

We hope this helps clarify the whole situation for you guys! If you have further questions about ride-hailing services, please drop us a comment below.
