The Best Broadband Internet Plan Glossary

Asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL)
A common internet connection that allows for data to be transmitted quickly via copper wires.
Bandwidth
The rate at which you can send (upload) and receive (download) data. It is usually measured in bits per second (bps).
Bit
This is a single unit of data or information. A kilobit (Kb) is 1,000 bits. A megabit (Mb) is 1,000,000 bits. When used in relation to internet packages and broadband plans, this is a unit of transmitted data.
Bitrate
The number of bits that are processed per second, minute, or hour. The higher the bitrate, the faster the data is transmitted and sent from device to device over the network.
Byte
A byte is a group of data or information (bit). There is no standard number for how many bits are in a byte, but the average seems to be eight.
Dial-up
Dial-up is a connection to the internet made through your phone line. Unlike ADSL broadband, however, dial-up will not allow you to use the internet and telephone at the same time, and you must be connected directly to your phone line with a cable. Dial-up is also much slower than ADSL.
Downstream
When you are downloading information from the internet, you are downstreaming.
Ethernet
Ethernet is used to connect computers to your local area network (LAN). An ethernet cable is required to make an ethernet connection, so wireless access is not possible.
Ethernet Port
An ethernet port is an opening on your computer where you can plug in an ethernet cable.
Downloading
The process of moving files from a computer system to your device via your network connection.
Download Limit
Your internet contract may specify a download limit which restricts the amount of data you can download. Most internet packages come with a specified maximum amount of data you are allowed to download each month. Exceeding these limitations could result in fees, your internet access being cut, or your web speed (bandwidth) being significantly reduced by your provider.
Fibre Optic Broadband
A type of internet connection that uses fibre optic cables to transfer data at higher speeds. Fibre optics are not as widespread as other types of broadband in Malaysia.
Hotspot
An area where you can access the internet using a wireless local area network (WLAN). Usually the networks are locked with WPA2-PSK security, which means you will need to know the security password in order to access the wireless network. Some hotspots are open and can be accessed by everyone.
Internet Plan
An internet data plan is a contract with an internet provider in Malaysia which sets down your data allowance and bandwidth. This internet plan will also state how much you have to pay for your internet service and how often.
Internet Service Provider (ISP)
Companies that offer broadband packages are called internet service providers or ISPs.
IP Address
IP stands for internet protocol, and refers to the exact number ascribed to your internet connection. A unique series of numbers is assigned to each device on a network, meaning that it is possible to see who went where on the network.
Local Area Network (LAN)
LAN is a network which links different devices in your home or even within your building to the internet.
Mbps
Megabits per second. A measure of how quickly data can be transmitted over a fixed or wireless network connection measured by the number of megabits transferred per second.
Microfilter
A microfilter, also known as an ADSL filter, is a device which connects both your router and telephone to your phone socket. This allows you to make and receive calls on your landline even as you browse the internet.
Modem
A device that allows your computer, laptop, mobile phone or tablet to connect to the internet via your telephone line. Modems have evolved over the years ? they used to be external devices, but now they are often built into your device.
Router
An electronic device that allows data to be transmitted within your network.
Streaming
Streaming allows users to watch a video or listen to music as they are downloading.
Unlimited Download
This allows you to download as much data as you want on your internet plan. However, you should check the fine print of your contract to see if your data allowance is truly unlimited, as sometimes there are conditions that you should be aware of.
Uploading
Transferring files from your computer, laptop, mobile phone, tablet or device to the internet.
Upstream
When you are uploading data to the internet, it is known as 'upstreaming.'
Usage Cap
Some internet plans in Malaysia include a prearranged internet usage cap which limits your data allowance over a specified period of time, usually one month. Your data allowance will be stated in your contract, and contracts with higher data allowances usually cost more.
Wide area network (WAN)
A network that is accessible over a large geographical area, such as a city or country.
Wireless broadband
The ability to wirelessly access a network. This means you can move around your home and remain connected to the internet. Wireless broadband is also known as ?mobile broadband.?
Wireless local area network (WLAN)
By using signals, data can be transmitted between the router and your device wirelessly.
Wireless Networking
When devices communicate and share data with each other over a wireless network, they are 'wirelessly networking.'
