More often than not, you would only want a consumer-level broadband connection. This means that your internet connection is for private or home use only. It doesn't make sense to apply for a business broadband connection for a household of five, especially since business broadband connections tend to be more expensive. This applies for the reverse: You wouldn't want a consumer connection even if it is cheaper for your business, as the amount of data a business needs to process is greater than a private user.
If you don't use the internet on a daily basis, then consider getting a prepaid broadband connection instead which would be the cheaper option. A postpaid broadband connection comes at a fixed monthly fee and will give you internet connectivity all the time. On the contrary, a prepaid broadband connection will let you access the internet only whenever you need to. Fiber broadband connections, however, only come as postpaid packages.

  • Speed - Generally speaking, ADSL broadbands are slowest, fibre broadbands are the fastest, while wireless broadbands are somewhere in between these two. If all else equal, try to go for the fastest broadband internet available for your area within your budget.
  • Quota and Data Capacity - Quite simply, how much broadband data that you can download over a period of time, usually for a month. Different broadband plans will have different data limits, they could be anywhere ranging from 1GB to unlimited data per month. Once you have reached the cap, you'll most likely revert to the slower basic internet. Wireless broadband services usually have lower data caps compared to ADSL broadband and fibre broadband services. In the end, it depends on your usage, for example do you like to stream movies and play online games? Do you have a big family living in your household?
  • Monthly Budget - Compare the different broadband packages and prices before making a decision. Only commit to a broadband plan that you can realistically pay off every month. Pick a broadband that suits your budget.
  • Mode of Access - Do you travel frequently and need internet on the go, or do you spend most of your time accessing the internet from the comfort of your home, or both? A good mobile broadband is easy to bring around and could connect you to the internet both at home or on the move. Check out the different options to find one that suits your lifestyle needs.
  • Area of Coverage - Broadband coverage in Malaysia varies based on the city and region you are located in. Fibre optic broadband connections are particularly costly to implement, that's why fibre broadband are limited to major cities and towns only, for example in the area of Kuala Lumpur, Petaling Jaya, Putrajaya, Cyberjaya, and Bangsar.
  • Contract Duration - Compare the different contract duration. When you sign up for a new broadband plan, be sure to read the fine prints. Most often you will get a 12 months to 24 months contract duration. Early termination of the contract might result in a hefty fine. All fibre broadbands only come as postpaid packages. However, some mobile broadbands are available in the form of a prepaid data plan.
  • Customer Support - Read online reviews and survey the customer service quality provided by each internet service providers. You might want to check if the helpdesk offers 24/7 support in case of any emergencies. Word of mouth from friends and colleagues can help you be best informed and get the best broadband recommendation.
  • Sign-up Gifts - Some internet service providers throw in a couple of freebies when you sign up for their broadband plans. For example, you might get free cable or broadband televisions with the broadband package.

Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) vs Dial-up

  • ADSL - A type of internet connection where data is transmitted over copper wires.
  • Dial-up - A slower internet connection made through phone line but doesn't allow you to use the internet and telephone at the same time.

Bit vs Byte

  • Bit - A bit is a single unit of data or information. Bits are used in broadband internet plans. A kilobit (kb) is 1,000 bits. A megabit (Mb) is 1,000,000 bits.
  • Byte - A byte is made up of a group of data or bits (usually eight bits).

Bandwidth vs Bitrate

  • Bandwidth - The rate at which you are able to upload and download data usually in bits per second (bps).
  • Bitrate - The number of bits that are processed per second/minute/hour. Higher bitrates means faster data transmission over the internet network.

Mbps vs kbps

  • Mbps - Megabits per second. The speed of your internet plan measured by the number of Megabits (1,000,000 bits) transferred per 1 second.
  • kbps - kilobits per second. The speed of your internet plan measured by the number of kilobits (1,000 bits) transferred per 1 second.

Download vs Upload vs Streaming

  • Download - The process of transferring data from the internet to your device.
  • Upload - The process of transferring data from your device to the internet.
  • Streaming - The continuous process of either uploading data to the internet or downloading data from the internet.

Broadband With Quota vs Unlimited Broadband

  • Broadband With Quota - A broadband usage cap which limits your data allowance over a specified period of time, usually for one month. Higher quota usually costs more.
  • Unlimited Broadband - An internet broadband plan in Malaysia that allows you to download as much data as you want, however sometimes it comes with certain conditions stated in the fine print of your contract.

Broadband is usually referring to a always on, high speed internet service that is capable of transmitting a large data capacity in a given time. The broadband technology is able to achieve this by using a wide range of data transmission frequencies over the communications network. Nowadays, broadband is being widely used to describe a fast internet connection.
There are three types of broadband in Malaysia: the ADSL, Fibre Broadband, and Wireless Broadband.
ADSL broadband is an older generation of broadband technology and hence is cheaper and more widespread in Malaysia. However, it suffers from limited data transfer speeds, usually getting up to a mere 8Mbps download speed if you subscribe to the most common ADSL broadband plans available.
Fibre optic broadband is a type of high speed internet connection that uses fibre optic cables to achieve high data transfer speeds. In Malaysia, fibre optics broadband still has a very limited area of coverage depending on your geographical location, and also more expensive than ADSL connections. Fibre broadband connections are faster than ADSL, with download speeds reaching up to 100-900Mbps.
Wireless broadband is a type of broadband in Malaysia where you can access the internet network wirelessly. Home broadband allows you to stay connected while you move around your home. Mobile broadband allows you to use the high speed internet while you're on the go. These days, mobile broadband plans usually comes together with your mobile phone data plans. While wireless broadband is not as fast as fibre broadband, but 4G LTE broadband on your smartphone is able to offer speeds close to Fibre connections.
Consumer broadband is meant for private or usage at home only, whereas business broadband is meant for a business setting. Home broadband plan is cheaper, yet comes with sufficient speed and quota for daily usage in a typical household in Malaysia. If you are running a business, you might want to get an office broadband plan. While it can get more expensive, it comes with a generous amount of speed and data allowance for running a smooth business operation.
An internet service provider is a company that offers broadband packages to the public. In Malaysia, this refers to ISPs such as Telekom Malaysia (TM), TIME Internet, Maxis Fibre Internet, DiGi Internet, U Mobile Internet, Celcom Internet, Yes 4G, Astro IPTV and more.
An internet plan is a contract with an internet service provider in Malaysia. In the internet plan, you agree to a set payment in exchange for a monthly data allowance and internet bandwidth. Usually you'll have to pay for the internet plan by month, and there's a minimum contractual commitment anywhere between 12-24 months. Premature termination of the internet plan could incur penalty fees.
