Four car drivers, including a foreign woman, had to return home using e-hailing services after their luxury vehicles were seized by JPJ on 6th August.
The seizure was carried out after their road tax had expired, during Ops Pengarah JPJ Selangor (Selangor JPJ Director’s Operation) which lasted nearly 5 hours starting from 8.30pm.
According to a check by Kosmo, one of them was a 41-year-old Chinese national. The woman was reportedly on her way home to Bukit Jalil, driving a luxury Mercedes-Benz with a road tax that had expired for over a year.
She had entered the country last year and married a local man, but was also found to be without a valid driving licence.
Meanwhile, another offender, a 25-year-old local man, admitted to committing the same offence. He explained that the Toyota Vellfire multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) he was driving had only been purchased 3 months ago.
He said the luxury MPV was bought by his brother through the transfer of an existing vehicle loan from the original owner.
“We had already informed the original owner to renew the road tax. However, he gave the excuse that he could not do so because of outstanding summonses,” the 25-year-old said.
Selangor JPJ Director Azrin Borhan said that a total of 16,735 offences for not having a driving licence were recorded between January and July this year.
“From that number, heavy vehicle drivers accounted for the highest figure with 7,116 cases, followed by motorcyclists (6,596), car drivers (2,576), and public service vehicles (447).
For the same period, there were also 25,338 road tax offences,” he said.
Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan, the Senior Director of Law Enforcement at JPJ has also revealed that celebrities and businessmen are keeping their luxury vehicles off‑the‑radar when it comes to road tax and insurance because these beauties are apparently “weekend cars”, hardly ever on the road and therefore do not deserve the urgency of always‑on documentation.
Kifli stressed that, yes it might be tempting to sidestep renewals if your supercar sleeps most of the week in your garage, but the law does not have a Sunday‑only exception. No renewal, even for a so‑called weekend cruiser, is still an offence.
JPJ is not playing games with that loophole no matter how slick the ride is.
