7 Raya Catering for Less Than RM20 Per Head

Written by Abdul Raqib Karim | Apr 5, 2024 6:22:30 AM

It seems only yesterday that we celebrated Chinese New Year and already the joyous celebration of Hari Raya Aidilfitri is upon us. And none could be happier than Muslims specifically and Malaysians in general for the holidays, the visits to the homes of friends and family as well as the sumptuous delights Hari Raya Aidilfitri open houses have to offer.

But the elephant in the room is that from as early as last year, the rising cost of living and goods puts a choke-hold on how much we can celebrate. Last month it was already projected that the price of goods was set to rise and even the government had to admit it could be a problem, with even the Prime Minister choosing to eschew his official open house this year. This saw the powers-that-be apply price caps on 22 items to avoid price gouging.

So while we can’t get prices as low as they used to be, we decided to help out a bit and offer you a list of some solidly affordable caterers to help you with your Raya open house or function this coming season, and all of them either at or below RM20 per pax. Because prepping for Raya can be stressful enough as it is, and we believe that good food shouldn’t break the bank

7 Raya Caterers For Less Than RM20 Per Head

Here are some of the caterers that offer catering packages for less than RM20 per head. To make things easier, we're only listing those located within the Klang Valley. Here they are in no particular order:

Tasty Touch Catering Service

We’re starting off this list with something a bit more exclusive. Tastytouch is an award winning caterer that is certified with both JAKIM and the Finance Ministry and boasts quite a few testimonials to its services. Its repertoire is extensive, doing Chinese banquets, Malay weddings, children’s events and it even has a fully vegetarian menu.

For Hari Raya catering specifically, it has two reasonably priced packages for smaller functions, one at RM15 that has lontong sayur lodeh and kuah kacang and another at RM20 with Nasi Minyak and Ayam Masak Merah. Each one also comes with kuih, drinks and a dessert. What’s more, you can even customize your menu with their online portal here

Haifaz Catering and Canopy

You usually don’t think a road-side stall would also do grand-scale catering but a lot of Malay stalls actually do! Usually selling their signature biryani and gravy dishes from their seemingly humble Tok Ayah stall in Hulu Langat, Haifaz Catering actually usually specializes in functions such as wedding kenduris and other kinds of large scale Malay ceremonial feasts that demand a very specific menu, as can be seen on their social media posts.

But for Hari Raya food catering, they also have a relatively smaller package for RM8 per pax for a minimum of 100 people with their biryani rice or some other kind of rice, white rice, a chicken dish, a beef dish, a vegetable dish, popadom, fruit and drinks.

Just remember that once you’re done eating such a hearty meal, you’re not getting anything done afterwards. 😉

BD Kitchen Express

Most people don’t think of Indonesian dishes when it comes to Hari Raya food catering in Malaysia. But the southern part of the peninsula has a long Sumatran and Javan tradition among its Malay community. You could literally swim across to Indonesia, if you were fit enough (and there weren’t any jellyfish 👀).

But because of this cultural proximity, Indonesian dishes commonly make their way to your typical Raya platter, with lontong and sayur lodeh being must-haves for the season. And as a result, we’ve included BD Kitchen Express, which specializes in Indonesian cuisine but can cater other types of foods can do large functions.

Like Haifaz Catering above, they too can cater up to a thousand people, for RM13.50 per pax.

But for Hari Raya catering, they’re also catering for functions with 100 to 500 people at RM19 per pax that serve 7 dishes from an enormous Indonesian repertoire as well. This includes Nasi Liwet, an Indonesian take on Nasi Lemak, Pergedel or potato croquettes, bakso dishes, Soto Ayam and many more.

Shatris Catering and Canopy

A small business that started 4 years ago, Shatris Catering weathered the pandemic, and is still going strong till this day. Like the catering companies above, it does a wide variety of different events and is also capable of very large functions, also up to a thousand people for Malay weddings and various other ceremonies.

For your Hari Raya catering however, they also do relatively smaller functions for RM16-20 per pax for about 30 people that serve the standard Malay kenduri cuisines of nasi minyak, ayam masak merah, mutton korma, side dishes and drinks.

Zf Caterer (For Box Lunches)

One thing that’s perhaps overlooked by some is that the spirit of charity that Ramadan engenders extends all throughout Hari Raya as well.

Apart from Zakat Fitrah, food giveaways are often catered with particular focus on orphanages, mosques and other charitable organisations. For giveaways, the box lunch is an excellent method for this and is fairly common.

ZF Caterer is a great choice for this kind of event. While they’re a 14-year veteran at the catering field and have an extensive client list of government functions, for smaller Hari Raya catering, they have nine different box lunches with prices from RM11.90 to RM20.90 per pax with both traditional and more western dishes (because even those celebrating will tire of the traditional fare after a couple of weeks 😅)
