Everyone Pays The Same 14% A Year, Even After A Late Payment

The Maybank Islamic Nadi Mastercard Credit Card-i gives every cardholder the same profit rate, which is fixed at 14% a year, or 1.17% a month. Maybank's FAQ says this one rate replaces the usual tiered credit card rates. So your rate stays the same whether you always pay on time or slip up now and then.

That's different from other Maybank Islamic's Ikhwan cards. They charge 15%, 17% or 18% a year, depending on how many of your last 12 payments were on time.

The profit isn't compounded either, so you never pay profit on top of profit. In the T&C's own example, leaving RM900 unpaid for a month costs RM10.50 in profit on the Nadi card-i. On an Ikhwan card at 18%, it's RM13.50.

No Points, No Cashback, But No Annual Fee Ever

This card keeps things basic on purpose. You won't earn TreatsPoints or cashback on anything you buy. Instead, you'll enjoy no annual fee for life, on your main card or any supplementary cards.

You'll still pay the RM25 service tax on each card, once when you start using it, and it renews every year. Unfortunately, you can't use TreatsPoints from your other Maybank cards to pay it.

You can still enjoy Maybank merchant deals and partner offers, as long as each offer allows it. Maybank says that's more than 1,000 merchant privileges across the region.

Pay Your Bill In Full Within 20 Days And You Pay No Profit

Clear your whole statement balance within 20 days of the statement date, and you won't pay any profit on your purchases. Maybank Islamic gives you ibra' (a rebate) to cancel it out. Pay less than the full amount, and the 14% per annum applies to what's left, calculated from the day each purchase appears on your account.

Each month, you need to pay at least 5% of what you owe or RM25, whichever is higher. You'll also need to pay any overdue amount, anything above your limit and the full monthly amount of any instalment or balance transfer plan. If you pay only the minimum (or less), Maybank uses up to 30% of that payment to cover profit first.

If you miss the minimum payment, you'll pay a late payment charge (ta'widh) of 1% of the unpaid balance, at least RM10 and no more than RM100. That's on top of the month's profit. If you think a payment will be difficult, call Maybank early.

Withdraw Cash Costs At Least RM11.65 Each Time

Each cash withdrawal costs a one-time fee of 2.52% of the amount or RM11.65, whichever is higher. Profit is 14% a year and starts on the same day, running until you pay it back. There's no 20-day profit-free window for cash, unlike for purchases. So even a RM200 withdrawal costs RM11.65 upfront, because 2.52% of RM200 is only RM5.04. On RM2,000, the fee is RM50.40.

The other Ikhwan cards charge 18% a year on cash, so the Nadi card-i's cash rate is four percentage points lower, with the same fee.

Limits Go Up To RM20,000, Depending On Your Pay

Your credit limit can be up to twice your monthly income, but never more than RM20,000. If you earn RM2,500 a month, you can get up to RM5,000. If you've got another Maybank card with a limit above RM20,000, don't expect the Nadi card-i to match it.

Already owe money on another Maybank credit card? You can move it to the Nadi card-i once, up to your approved limit. You can only move what you've spent, so profit charges stay on the old card.

Call Maybank Group Customer Care at 1-300-88-6688 (or +603-7844 3696 from overseas) to do it, because you can't request it in the MAE app. Maybank's FAQ says you can also move debt from other banks under its separate balance transfer programme.

Want to split a big purchase into monthly payments? EzyPay, EzyPay Plus, EzyCash and Cash Treats all work on this card, each with its own terms.

You Can Tap With Google Pay Or Samsung Pay Only

You can add the card to Google Pay or Samsung Pay. Apple Pay isn't available yet, and Maybank suggests its other cards if you use Apple Pay often.

Because it's an Islamic card, it won't work at merchants Maybank sees as non-Shariah-compliant. That includes liquor and cigar shops, betting and lotteries, dating services, and funeral services and crematoriums.

Want more control over tap payments? You can lower your daily tap-to-pay limit or switch it off through Maybank's channels. Maybank doesn't send SMS alerts when you pay with your PIN at shops, so turn on notifications in the MAE app to still get an alert.

Earn RM2,000 A Month And Be 21 To 65 To Apply

The card is open to Malaysians aged 21 to 65 who earn at least RM24,000 a year. Supplementary cardholders can be aged 18 to 65.

Have these ready when you apply:

  • A copy of your NRIC (front and back) or passport, plus your supplementary applicant's
  • Your latest BE form and its official tax receipt
  • Your last three months' payslips
  • Your last six months' savings or current account statements
  • Self-employed? Copies of your business registration and your last six months' bank statements instead

Pick This Card If You Usually Carry A Balance

The Nadi card-i makes sense if you don't always clear your bill. Leave RM5,000 unpaid for a month, and you'd pay RM58.33 in profit at 14% a year. At the Ikhwan cards' 18% rate, it'd be RM75. That's RM16.67 a month you keep, and the rate won't increase if you miss a payment.

If you pay in full every month, you won't pay the 14% at all, so a rewards card will give you more. Skip it too if you need Apple Pay or a limit above RM20,000. See how it compares with other Islamic credit cards on CompareHero.
