A man from China has been attracting plenty of attention online for his survival skills. Whilst his wife and 2 sons live in Tianjin, 38 year old Yin, a programmer, works 130 km away, in Beijing.

Instead of renting a house in Beijing, Yin has decided to live in his car during weekdays, saving him up to 2,500 yuan (RM1,475) a month on rent.

Due to limited programming job opportunities in Tianjin, Yin had to look for a job in Beijing. He was initially renting a house in Beijing. However in 2022, Yin decided to start living in his car instead to be more prudent.

Unlike some who are forced into this lifestyle by hardship, Yin chose to live in his vehicle to cut down on living costs

And no, he’s not roughing it. In fact, he’s managed to create a surprisingly cosy setup that includes a bed, cooking equipment, and even nightly karaoke sessions. Yes, you read that right, karaoke in his car!

“My leisure activities after work include watching TV, singing karaoke, and calling my family. Sometimes, I write programmes. Except for the inconvenience of finding a toilet, everything is fine.” Yin shared.

According to Yin, he sees a significant reduction in his monthly expenses by living in his car. He spends 400 yuan (RM236) every month on toll, and 300 yuan (RM177) on electricity to charge his car. If there is a need for him to go back home midweek, then he would take the train which would cost him 100 yuan (RM59).

“I don’t mind the criticisms”

According to South China Morning Post, many netizens are impressed by his resourcefulness and positive outlook. Some even said they envy his minimalist, rent-free life. But not everyone’s cheering. A few users questioned how safe or hygienic it is to live in a car for such a long time.

Yin, however, isn’t too bothered by the criticism. Yin commented that, “Isn’t it relaxing to sleep in the car while listening to birds sing and the gentle flow of streams? I don’t mind others’ opinions. I’m committed to the lifestyle I prefer”.

Three years in, and Yin’s car isn’t just a vehicle anymore, it’s a home, a kitchen and a stage all in one.
