In a candid post on Threads that has gone viral, a Malaysian woman recalls the early days with her then-boyfriend, a widower of 10 years, and how she was excited to make his birthday count, especially when he mentioned that nobody had celebrated it for a decade.

She decided to go all out and spent RM1,800 on a heartfelt birthday celebration at a fine dining restaurant. But when her own birthday arrived, silence greeted her. No surprise, no wish, not even a simple roti canai and teh tarik. She waited for 3 weeks, hoping for an explanation or gesture, but none came.

He earns a 5-figure income

As time went on, things became tense when she asked about the lack of acknowledgment. His response sounded like the relationship’s reality check: he had simply forgotten.

When she chooses a restaurant to eat, she’d pick somewhere nice that could be slightly pricey… and yes, you guessed right, she would pick up the tab. However, when he chose the eatery, then it’d be a simple mamak restaurant, AND he would decide what she could order. She would feel too cautious to order anything extra at the mamak as she had grown accustomed to his frugality, although he is a businessman who earns a 5-figure income.

His only investment in the relationship was a packet of Thai tea

Their relationship endured for just over a year. During that time she bought him countless gifts while he offered only one thing in return: a single packet of Thai tea. Without any dramatic confrontation she walked away.

The online crowd felt for her, but at the same time commented that this ought to be a lesson learnt to those who spend too much money on people they are merely dating, and not married to.

Sometimes walking away is not giving up. It can be the strongest way to reclaim your value.
