More parents are sending their children to enrichment classes, but is it really worth it? If you’re planning to register your kids to such programmes, we’ve listed some centres (including the fees) in the Klang Valley area that are worth considering. Read below to find out.

Parents only want the best for their children. They’re willing to save up and invest unlimited amounts of money (and time) to send their kids to enrichment classes to help them learn their passions or interests.

It is not uncommon to see kids being involved in different lessons such as music, art, public speaking, martial arts, and the usual academic subjects. Exposing children to these types of learnings will make them understand new ideas and concepts as they grow up.

If you’re planning to enrol your kids into enrichment programmes, here are some of the centres that provide good programmes in the Klang Valley area. We also include the fees for you to compare.

Four things to consider when choosing enrichment classes for kids

1. Sign up for a trial class
Some enrichment programmes offer trial classes for parents to see if the format, environment and setting fits their child. You can use these trial classes to gauge your child’s level of interest before deciding to commit to a full programme.

2. Compare the prices and know what you’re paying for
Some classes can cost you quite an amount of money. With many learning centres to choose from, consider listing down the prices they offer and see if they match your budget. There may be some premium courses that require extra money for you to pay, therefore, be sure to know the benefits they offer so it will be worth it for your child.

3. Consider your child’s interests and desires
Do not register your kid in a class without understanding your child’s needs and wants. What exactly are their interests? What activities or classes will contribute to their growth? It’s important for you to understand their learning habits and preferences because you don’t want your kids to be unhappy by ending up in a class that they don’t enjoy.

4. Read the reviews
Another way to convince yourself that this is the right place to send your kids to is by checking out the centre’s Facebook page or Google reviews. The reviews that are posted by parents will likely help you make an informed decision.

8 Money Tips For Chinese New Year

  • By CompareHero.my

You can tell that Chinese New Year is just around the corner when the shopping malls have put up their decorations and your colleagues are eagerly talking about going back to their hometowns. But did you know there are many ways to save money this Chinese New Year? Let’s take this opportunity to start the year on the right foot by taking charge of your finances.

1. Go easy on the decorations

CNY is all about the decorations! But you don’t really have to go overboard with extra lights and lanterns. If you still have last year’s decorations you keep in the store, take them all out and reuse them again this year. You don’t necessarily have to buy new ones.

You can also check out some YouTube tutorial videos or some cool DIY hacks on Pinterest where you can self-create the decorations.

2. Rewear you old CNY clothes with a new style

Buying new clothes for Chinese New Year can be wasteful. People are encouraged and told to buy new clothes because it’s considered back luck to keep the old. You can still come out with a new outfit without having to buy new clothes, but how does this work?

Reorganise your existing wardrobe and rearrange the previous CNY collection that you have, or clothes that you rarely or have never worn before. There’s a chance that you’ll find something that will complete the CNY vibe.

If you’re still adamant in getting new clothes, you can take advantage of the CNY sale. Some online stores offer good deals and prices, so you can check it out and see if there’s any good outfit you can wear for the festive season.

3. Look out for dining deals

Many of the local restaurants will be taking advantage of the break and won’t be open for business. So instead of bringing your family to a fast food joint, try checking out sites like Fave for special dining deals. It won’t necessarily be Chinese cuisine, but that doesn’t mean you should binge on junk food or eat unhealthy meals. You really don’t want to be putting on the ‘fat’ in ‘fatt’ over Chinese New Year.

4. Go easy on the snacks

Every year, you’ll see stores and stalls selling festive snacks and mandarin oranges everywhere you go. However with prices going up and a number of snacks you get going down, you may want to reconsider how much you spend. So set a fixed budget for your snacks, as your guests are there for the company, not the cuisine!

We’re not saying that you should completely go without these snacks, but why not consider stocking up on non-festive snacks as well? They’re just as tasty and more affordable. Don’t forget to bring a few mandarin oranges with you when visiting your friend’s homes as well!

5. Shop online (if you must)

New doesn’t necessarily mean better, especially if you’re going to be changing your entire wardrobe! So try to refrain from buying new clothes for Chinese New Year if you have outfits that are less than a year old. But if you still insist on getting a new outfit, check out sites like Shopee, Lazada and Zalora for their Chinese New Year sales items. Don’t forget to check which days your bank’s credit card may get a special discount as well!

6. Teach your family new money tricks

It’s important for kids to learn about money early in life. During Lunar New Year celebrations, your children may receive money from friends or relatives, so why not take this opportunity to teach them about managing money. Sit down with them and explain the basics, such as the importance of having a budget, saving money and paying off any debts.

7. Manage your ‘ang pows’

This goes especially for our fellow Malaysians who are married and have to give red packets (ang pow) to their friends and family. Pay off all financial commitments and set aside your monthly savings first, even before you start counting how much you need for ang pow money. This will help keep your finances in check, so be realistic!

Ang pows are meant to be a symbolic gift for luck, so there’s no need to be competitive about who’s giving out more money for Chinese New Year. If necessary, you can have a rates card (we’re not kidding, people actually do this) to see who should get more or less, but stay within your budget.

If you plan on giving an ang pow to your friend’s children, ask the parents if they are comfortable with how much you’re giving their child. Don’t be that aunt or uncle that gives a child more money than they know what to do with and end up causing a scene when the parents have to take away the money. Instead, give the ang pow money directly to the parents and explain that it’s a gift for their child to start a savings plan.

8. Don’t push your luck when it comes to gambling

This one’s a bit tricky but rest assured we won’t be getting preachy about the legalities of gambling in Malaysia. However, we advise that you don’t get too carried away while playing cards with your friends and family over Chinese New Year. Keep the stakes low and friendly so you don’t end up losing all of your ang pow money (or friends and family).

On the other hand, some of you may be tempted to head up to Genting Highlands to test your Chinese New Year luck. As adults, you can make your own choices and we hope that you make the right decision for yourself. Please note that gambling addiction is a very serious problem, so please seek help if necessary. One snippet of wisdom we’d also like to share with you is this:

“If it was that easy to make money off gambling, all the casinos would be out of business. And that’s why the house always wins.”

8 Ways To Make Your Angpow Money Work For You

  • By CompareHero.my

Angpow money is one of the “benefits” of Chinese New Year. Unfortunately, our angpow hauls shrink the older we become. RM100 just seems a lot less these days. But it doesn’t matter how much you get, why not spend it in a way that helps you save more money in the long run? Now that sounds like a good deal to us.

1. Deposit the money into your savings or fixed deposit account

You’re an adult now, start adulting! Gone were the days where your parents will collect all your angpows from you at the end of the day for safekeeping. So you’re stuck with the boring task of putting that money into your account and not touching it till a rainy day comes.

2. Start or expand your investment portfolio

Did you know that there are some fintech apps that allow you to start investing from just RM1? And good investment advice has always said to diversify your investment portfolios. So it is a good idea to check out apps for gold investment, P2P funding or even robo-advisors.

As with all things related to finance, remember to do your research first and don’t rush into it if you’re unsure.

3. Re-Angpow

Similar to re-gifting, save your Chinese New Year money for future red packets that you have to give out when wedding season rolls around. It’s a thing that most 20 or 30 somethings have to go through, and your bank account will normally cry because there’s this unspoken rule where you have to cover the cost of your seat at the wedding dinner.

4. Buy a multicooker

If you are constantly eating out or ordering from delivery apps, then you can save hundreds of ringgit a year just by cooking food yourself. Use your angpow money to buy a multicooker now. Multicookers can help with a whole range of culinary tasks, from simple steaming, to frying, grilling and even baking.

There’s no excuse for those of you who don’t know how to cook, or those that can never quite seem to get the timings or temperatures right and are constantly disappointed by overcooked or burnt dishes.

Many of the multicookers have automatic settings that will self-regulate the pressure and temperature so you can cook your meals to perfection every time. You can find multicookers on Lazada for as cheap as RM80 to the higher functionality ones that cost above RM200.

5. Property

Of course, you won’t be able to buy a property right away with a single angpow – unless your parents give you thousands of ringgit  – which is unlikely to happen. But you can start saving up and have a long-term financial plan to purchase a house in the future. Although it’s going to take some time, it’s best to start early.

6. Invest in yourself

Investing in yourself can take on many forms, and by making small and positive changes, you will ultimately be creating a brighter future for yourself.  Expanding your level of knowledge and skill isn’t limited to the business arena and doesn’t necessarily need to be formal. There are many “skill investment” avenues. RM50 to RM500 is enough for a variety of online courses.

Those working in corporate offices or the private sector will do well to look at Business English and communication. Those in other lines of work should ask their supervisors or managers for a recommendation – pick something that will advance your career. Check out Udemy or Coursera, there are literally thousands of courses to choose from.

7. Get insured

Why not insure yourself for a multitude of things with your angpow money? Annual travel insurance can cost as little as RM180, that works out to just RM0.49 a day and you’re covered for travel around the whole of Malaysia. If you don’t need an annual travel insurance plan, then you surely need a medical card that could help you cover important health-related expenses. We’ve found that really decent medial cards between RM400-RM500.

8. Pay off debt

It’s always tempting to treat yourself when you come into some extra money. But the way to long-term financial stability comes with a bit of discipline. If you have outstanding debt, your first priority should be to pay it off. The compounding interest rate of even small debts can quickly snowball.

Let your angpow money be the first repayment, and remember not to spend more on credit cards until the debt is paid off.
