CompareHero.my partners with CTOS to take first step towards offering personalised financial products

  • By CompareHero.my
  • March 3, 2022

CTOS, the leading credit reporting agency in Malaysia, has today announced a partnership with CompareHero.my, a local personal finance platform. Through the partnership, all Malaysians will be able to access a free credit score assessment, to help them better understand their creditworthiness. This serves as the building blocks of future innovation within the financial space, enabling CompareHero.my to provide personalised financial product recommendations to its customers via their online platform.

Underpinning this partnership is the shared goal of advocating for and empowering the improvement of financial literacy in Malaysia. An important part of financial literacy is arming consumers with the knowledge of their credit standing through their MyCTOS Score Report.  Consumers that are aware of their scores are more likely to pay their bills on time and are able to increase their credit scores moving forward.

The CTOS Score is a three-digit number that indicates a consumer’s credit risk. The score ranges from 300 to 850 and the higher the score, the lower the credit risk. Having a high credit score shows that customers are responsible and diligent about paying bills, which makes it more likely for banks and lenders to approve credit applications and offer better terms. Scores can also be delivered instantaneously, helping lenders speed up loan approvals.

Our new partnership with CompareHero.my allows CTOS to continue our goal in providing innovative solutions to consumers so they can manage their credit health better. This will improve their access to credit, while realizing our aim to empower Malaysians to make better financial decisions based on their own needs and affordability,” said Eric Hamburger, Deputy Group CEO of CTOS Digital Berhad.

CompareHero.my users will be able to obtain the complimentary CTOS Scores by verifying their identity remotely through the market-leading CTOS eKYC solution, which will also be integrated into the CompareHero.my platform.

The Covid-19 pandemic has led to a huge uplift within the digital economy, while at the same time, putting a spotlight on the financial health of many Malaysians. In partnership with CTOS, beginning with the credit score assessment, we aim to reemphasise the importance of building healthier financial lives and continue adding value to the overall ecosystem. To celebrate this, we are pleased to share that CompareHero.my will also be offering 5,000 complimentary CTOS scores per month, on a first come first serve basis,” announced Eu Jin Voon, General Manager of CompareHero.my.

Do you know your credit score standing? If you do not, it would be prudent to seize the opportunity to receive a complimentary CTOS credit score via CompareHero.my.

How To Protect Your Cryptocurrency From Theft

  • By CompareHero.my
  • March 2, 2022

From October 2020, nearly 7,000 people have reported losses of more than $80 million to scams. In comparison to the previous year, the cases reported were twelve times higher, while the total losses were nearly 1,000% higher.

It’s become so common to hear stories of people being duped into visiting websites that appear to provide possibilities to invest in or mine cryptocurrencies, but are actually scams.

Unfortunately, it isn’t easy to track an attacker, as they often disappear into the abyss of the anonymous network. With that said, it doesn’t mean you need to say goodbye to a good night’s sleep if you plan to own any cryptocurrencies. Rather, your best protection comes from understanding the nature of cryptocurrencies. Here are a few ways to help you with that.

A hybrid approach in managing digital wallets

Online wallets, also known as hot wallets, are the most common method for crypto investors to store their currencies. However, keeping all cryptocurrencies online is dangerous, as pro hackers have the power to attack your account if they want to.

Adopt an offline wallet (or a “cold wallet”).

This, of course, will depend on how you’re utilising your cryptocurrencies — whether you’re an active trader or a long-term investor. Keep what you don’t usually need in a cold wallet. A cold wallet is a hardware (looks like a thumb drive) that can be unplugged from the Internet.

Better safe than sorry!

Passwords

Besides storing cryptocurrencies in different wallets, passwords deserve an equal amount of spotlight. For example, using the same password across all your wallets and accounts puts you at a higher risk for hackers to access your accounts.

To avoid data breaches, create solid passwords, different passwords for other accounts with two-factor authentication, and never forget to change the passwords regularly.

On top of the importance of increasing your password’s strength, don’t forget them. Note it down physically or look for a trustworthy password manager to help reduce the risk of losing the entire crypto wallet.

Stefan Thomas, one of the few early investors of Bitcoin, has admitted that he has lost his fortune by forgetting the password of his hard drive (IronKey). A mistake that cost him £100 billion (estimated amount).

Cautious with internet connection

Hackers have been known to set up bogus Wi-Fi hotspots or utilize public Wi-Fi to entice unwary web browsers.

A hacker’s goal is to deceive users to log on to their server, which allows them to take the victim’s account names and passwords and send them to phishing or malware sites. On top of that, everything on the victim’s devices, including files, will be exposed.

For example, a proof-of-concept project called CoffeeMiner has shown the threats of connecting to public Wi-Fi. The hacker created a dangerous virus that seeks to invisibly utilise all devices connected to that Wi-Fi for its own benefit.

They can also get access to your social media, documents, or even financial accounts without you even realizing that something has gone wrong. What’s more, is that you can lose all of it in seconds.

Put simply, don’t connect to an unknown connection. If the internet is a must for you while travelling, bring your own Wi-Fi with you – a mobile hotspot or separate device. However, if you can’t attempt any options above, install a software firewall, or turn on a VPN when you connect.

Be aware of internet traffic

Log-in pages that look almost similar to the real thing? It could be a phishing scam.

Many who have a cryptocurrency wallet have been using a mobile app to keep track of their funds. But, malicious hackers are driven to target investors with mobile phishing attacks to steal your login credentials.

One of the best ways to prevent cyberattacks, viruses, or scams is by installing high-quality security software. For instance, a Web Application Firewall analyzes websites and apps to monitor and safeguard the system from cyberattacks.

Avoid sharing the secret key

A secret key is used to verify that the person sending or receiving the digital currencies is the wallet’s owner. Therefore, consider adopting a paper wallet. The process simply involves printing the secret key and corresponding address on a paper sheet. It is one of the safest techniques to keep your secret key away from any possible digital threats.

Before entering your secret key, double-check that you can trust the downloaded software or website that asked for it. Never give up your Secret Key to anybody online, regardless of how trustworthy they appear to be. Likewise, be wary of anyone who claims to require your Secret Key immediately for any supposed urgent reason, financial or otherwise.

Avoid trusting any unreliable cryptocurrency exchange, wallets, brokerages, or mobile apps

Before deciding which platform to use, investors should carefully review the security aspects of each platform to understand how their data is managed. When it comes to keeping your crypto safe, even entities that can be trusted need to have multi-factor authentication, SSL/TLS encryption, and air-gapped devices kept offline.

For two main reasons, cryptocurrency security experts advise against keeping any digital currency assets on an exchange. First, if the exchange is hacked, you could lose all your assets. Second, if the exchange maintains your cryptocurrencies on an IOU basis, it means that if the exchange goes bankrupt, you may not be able to retrieve your funds.

It is an extremely crucial step when it comes to selecting any third parties between you and your cryptocurrencies. The top priority is definitely safety — security standards, the safety of funds, security team, user-protection security program, transparency, and user data protection.

Malaysia Personal Income Tax E-filling Guide (2021 LHDN)

  • By CompareHero.my
  • March 1, 2022

In case you missed it, tax season is upon us again! It’s that time of the year when Malaysian citizens and residents will begin declaring all their earnings in the previous year.

Now if you’re legally employed in Malaysia, or you are an employer here, you would have to pay taxes. However, in this article, we’ll be solely focusing on Malaysia Personal / Individual Income Tax (YA2021), that is, tax paid by employees in Malaysia.

If this is the first time you’re filing your taxes or you just need a clear guide on how to do the e-filling LHDN 2021, this article is just for you! Read on to find out all you need to know about declaring tax returns in Malaysia.

Let’s start with this basic question:

Who should file tax returns?

According to Lembaga Hasil Dalam Negeri (LHDN)–also known as the Inland Revenue Board–those earning at least RM34,000 a year after EPF deductions need to pay taxes. Those who fail to do so can face legal action, so make sure you do your part and declare your income.

However, even if you earn less than RM34,000 annually, you should still file your taxes. You won’t have to pay anything, but it’s still good to get into the habit of declaring your income. At this juncture, it’s worth mentioning that there’s a difference between filing your tax returns and paying taxes, as not everyone who files their returns will need to pay tax–only those who earn RM34,000 and more a year.

And speaking of that, any income that you earn outside of Malaysia is not taxable. But you will need to declare ALL types of income (part time and freelance included) that you earn in Malaysia.

Now, let’s jump right on to the next important question you might ask:

How are my taxes calculated?

Firstly, the total of all your incomes in the whole tax year will be added. Then, if you qualify for any of the tax exemptions and reliefs, those amounts will be deducted from your income amount. Tax exemptions and reliefs are ‘discounts’ you can get for certain expenses made in the year. We’ll look at what exemptions you can for the 2021 tax year shortly but for now, this is what you need to know:

Total income – tax exemptions and reliefs = chargeable/taxable income

Your tax rate is calculated based on your taxable income. So the more taxable income you earn, the higher the tax you’ll be paying. Per LHDN’s website, these are the tax rates for the 2021 tax year.

Coming back to the tax exemptions and reliefs, these are all the ones that were announced by the government during the 2022 Budget speech:

  • RM9,000 for individuals
  • Up to RM4,000 for those who contribute to the Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF), including freelance and part time workers
  • Up to RM3,000 for kindergarten and daycare fees
  • Sales tax fully waived for new passenger vehicles
  • 100% exemption on import and excise duties, sales tax and road tax for electric vehicles
  • 50% off for car seat purchases for B40 families

Lifestyle and entertainment

  • Up to RM1,000 for domestic travel expenses
  • Full exemption on entertainment duties for theme parks, cinemas, sporting events etc.
  • Up to RM2,500 for book purchases or newspaper and magazine subscriptions, both physical and online
  • Up to RM2,500 for gym subscriptions or purchase of sports equipment

Technology

  • Up to RM2,500 for purchases of mobile phones, laptops, tablets and similar devices
  • Up to RM2,500 for internet subscriptions

Health and well-being

  • Up to RM1,000 for a full medical check-up
  • Up to RM,000 for vaccinations
  • Up to RM8,000 for parents’ medical expenses and care

Please note that you can claim the above for expenses made on or before 31st December 2021 only.

Can I amend my tax form if I made an error?

Realised you declared a wrong amount only after you submitted your form? Good news: you’re allowed to fix it. However, how you can make these changes depends on whether you filled in your form online or manually, or whether you amend them before or after the submission deadline.

Online:

Login to ezHasil and click on ‘e-Application for Amended BE’ and follow the instructions shown accordingly.

Manually:

For amendments made before the submission date, you only need to submit a letter explaining what the changes are together with relevant proof such as receipts, bills and so on.

For amendments that are made after the deadline, you must make them within 6 months of that deadline by filling up an Amended Return Form. This can be done online or through the LHDN branch that keeps your tax file.

According to LHDN’s website, you can use the Amended Return Form to make changes on your tax form for the following items:

  • Income under declared / not declared
  • Expenses / other claims over claimed
  • Capital allowances / incentives / reliefs over claimed

For other types of amendments, an Amended Return Form is not needed, and you can just submit a letter with proof of your changes, similar to amendments made before the submission date.

Bonus: Important tips to remember before filing your tax returns

Take note of the LHDN e-filling 2021 deadline

If you’re a very busy person, or if this is your first time doing this, you might just forget to fill up that LHDN form on time. Please note that the deadlines for tax filing are 30th April 2022 and 15th May 2022 for manual filing and e-Filing, respectively.

Keep all your receipts

When claiming exemptions and reliefs, ensure that you have the required proof to make that claim. For example, if you had spent RM2,000 on a new laptop and would like to claim this, keep the receipt for that purchase as proof. Under Section 82A of the Income Tax Act 1987, you are required to keep such proof/documents for up to 7 years from the end of the year of assessment.

Be honest and accurate when filling up the form

And speaking of proof and documents, be sure to input the correct amount of income you earned and exemptions you’re claiming. Under Section 114 of the Act mentioned above, anyone who falsifies an entry on a tax form can be “liable to a fine of not less than one thousand ringgit and not more than twenty thousand ringgit or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding three years or to both”. They will also need to pay 3x the tax amount which was undercharged as a penalty.

Of course, you will only be penalised under this Section if you deliberately declared a wrong amount. If you made a genuine mistake, you can amend the tax form as we mentioned earlier. That being said, do your best to be as accurate as possible and double-check everything before submitting your form.

We hope this article cleared most of the doubts that you had regarding filing your taxes. If you’re about to start the process soon, good luck! The deadline is still weeks away, but we strongly urge you not to wait until the last minute.

12 Kesalahan Trafik yang Mungkin Tidak Anda Ketahui

  • By CompareHero.my
  • February 28, 2022

4. Menjual barangan ke pemandu di jalan

Hari pertama – ke-15: RM150
Hari ke-16 – ke-30: RM200
Hari ke-31– hari ke-60: RM300

Walaupun keadaan ini biasa  dilihat, terutamanya di kawasan luar bandar ataupun kampong, namun ketahui bahawa ia salah disisi undang-undang untuk bejual-beli di jalan raya jika anda sedang memandu. Beri perhatian sepenuhnya keatas pemanduan anda!

5. Memasang tirai pada tingkap kereta

Hari pertama – ke-15: RM150
Hari ke-16 – ke-30: RM200
Hari ke-31– hari ke-60: RM250

7. Apabila kenderaan anda tidak memiliki hon

Hari pertama – ke-15: RM70
Hari ke-16 – ke-30: RM120
Hari ke-31 – hari ke-60: RM200

Kelebihan Menggunakan Kad Kredit Berbanding Tunai

  • By CompareHero.my
  • February 25, 2022

Kad kredit mula diperkenalkan untuk kegunaaan umum sekitar 1950-an, apabila BankAmericard dikeluarkan oleh Bank of America.
